By signing a long-term contract with Sergio Perez, Red Bull Racing deprived Pierre Gasly of the opportunity to move to this team. The Frenchman isn’t really interested in continuing his career at AlphaTauri without the option of moving to Red Bull Racing – and he’s ready to consider other options…
Pierre Gasly: ”When Red Bull extended the contract with Perez, I was not surprised. I fully understand that Sergio fully meets all the requirements the team sets for the co-pilot. Perez is having a great season, he is fast and experienced, he has the financial backing and he really suits the team. It was no surprise to me.
It is clear that this contract will also affect my career. Now, together with Helmut Marko, we are looking for the best option that will allow us to move forward.
Last year, when we had a more competitive car, I proved what I can do. Not only last year, but also in 2020 and 2019. Therefore, on the one hand I understand the position of the team, but this does not mean that everything should stay with me as it is. We’re just looking for the option that’s best for everyone.
Of course I am completely focused on performing at AlphaTauri at the moment. I do and will always do my best for the team, even in difficult times for them.
Unfortunately we were not as competitive as a year ago when I qualified sixth several times and often fought in races with Charles Leclerc.
It’s unbelievable how much can change in a year. Now Charles is fighting for the title and we are struggling to get into the top ten. We have a bigger challenge ahead of us, but I like challenges.
Of course I have my own ambitions. I want more, I want to fight for race wins. Now the main priority is to spend the season with AlphaTauri and find the best option for us together with Hellmuth. He’s known me almost since I was a kid, we’ve been working together for about ten years. I think we will eventually find a solution.
My contract runs until 2023, after which I am willing to consider any options. Red Bull wants to keep me in the program, but it is not yet clear how this will work. With the support of Red Bull I am ready to play in another team as Alex Albon is now with Williams. I’m ready to leave the Red Bull program, but I don’t want to go into details – I don’t want this to make the headlines.”
