Sebastian Vettel, four-time world champion, Aston Martin team driver, spoke about the qualities a Formula 1 driver needs to make the right decisions on the track.
Sebastian Vettel: “Instincts alone are not enough to make decisions at a speed of 300 km/h. To understand how to trade, you need both information and experience. Good races taught me a lot, but in most cases I learned from those races where we ran into problems – in such cases you really learn a lot.
But you need the support of the team because most of the time you don’t work alone and all your feelings get known to the engineers in the garage or on the pit wall. Obviously during the race telemetry data is received by the team online – there are many specialists in the garage and on the pit wall watching what is happening with the car at all times.
Of course, after each session you analyze all this, try to understand what can be done to make the car faster. I think what’s important here is a combination of intuition, sensations and reactions to what you see and make some decision based on all of this.
But every time everything evolves differently and it is extremely difficult to foresee anything. It is important to be able to perceive information quickly, adapt to different conditions and circumstances, work with people around you and try to understand the characteristics of the car you are driving.
But when you succeed, you experience a very nice feeling – this is what happens when you fly to the limit and you manage to do a lap that is almost ideal. †
