In Malaysia they would like to return the national Grand Prix, but without outside investment that is almost impossible.
The last time Sepang hosted a Formula 1 round was in 2017, when the organizers declined, even though the contract ran until 2018 due to increased FOM payments and reduced ticket sales.
In an interview with the Malaysian edition of The Vibes, Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Hanna Yeo said that Sepang received state funding for modernization, which is now underway and should be completed by the end of the month for the Porsche Carrera Cup, but there is still no money for Formula 1.
Hanna Yeoh: “Formula 1 is very expensive. We have been waiting a long time from the government for 20 million ringgit to upgrade the track and use these funds for ongoing repairs.
If we could organize a Formula 1 race, we certainly would, but at the moment we cannot afford to organize such events.”
