1996 world champion Damon Hill said on the F1 Nation podcast that he still doesn’t understand why Carlos Sainz was fined, stripping the Ferrari driver of fourth place.
Damon Hill: “I can’t understand how Carlos Sainz got a five second penalty at a time when there wasn’t really a race because this lap was canceled, but this penalty affected her result.
I think I should have chosen a different punishment. It was possible to add penalty points to the super license – the stewards have such an opportunity. Sainz was fined for hitting Alonso’s car, but then Fernando returned to his position and Carlos flew out of ten, although the circle on which this happened was then cancelled.
Given several other incidents, including one where Alpine drivers crashed their cars, it’s completely unclear where the line should be drawn in this situation.
The race director was in a difficult situation and the press reaction was very mixed. Some said what happened proves that in Formula 1 they just don’t know what to do. Others rejoiced that our sport creates truly unpredictable situations. I’ve always loved that in Formula 1.”
