Aston Martin finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship last year and is second after three races this season. Team leader Mike Krak explained why the Silverstone team was able to add so much.
Mike Krak: “I didn’t think we would finish second, but I knew we would be better than last year. Last season we finished seventh in the Constructors’ Championship, but at the end of the year the car was better than this position. In Abu Dhabi we were able to compete with McLaren and Alpine, although they were still a tenth or two tenths faster, but we closed this gap.
When Fernando Alonso tested our car the day after the race, we saw that the car was not that bad compared to Alpine, who knew Fernando well. So at the end of last year we were in about fourth place and we took a step forward based on that.
I think some opponents have not been able to get all the ingredients together this season. If you take a step forward and others may not, then our current results are quite understandable.
Speaking of the prospects of competing with Red Bull Racing, Krak said: “We are significantly behind them. Even if Red Bull stops modifying the car, we will need a season to catch up. Moreover, they have a different infrastructure and capacities than we do.
Of course we use the fastest car as a benchmark, but we don’t drive ourselves crazy by constantly evaluating the difference between a Ferrari, a Mercedes or an Alpine. It makes no sense, because depending on the route the holes get bigger or smaller. This can cause errors in the analysis.
