Liberty Media explained the regulation change in 2022 by an increase in the number of overtakes and the density of the fight, and as a result, they got a new era of dominance by one of the teams.
Speaking to investors in Liberty Media, Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said the lack of competition may put off old fans, but not those who have begun to follow in recent years. For some reason Formula 1 cherishes them more.
Stefano Domenicali: “Red Bull can only be congratulated on the better work. But the rivals are very close to them. Very close. And I am sure that in conditions of limited budgets, the competition will gradually become fiercer.
For die-hard fans, one-car dominance reduces interest, but in new markets, for new fans, it’s not as important. Yes, we would like to see more competition, but when you look at the market where we have growth today, this factor is not as relevant as it seems.
In the first three races the Red Bull cars were very fast, but I expect the rivals to close the gap. We will have to wait to see the effect of last year’s wind tunnel penalty. The season is very long this year, I think there are still surprises waiting for us before the end.”
