FIA president continues polemic with racers…

New FIA president Mohammed bin Sulayem is dissatisfied with the high social activity of some racers. He believes that they should race, not demonstrate their beliefs.

He recently stated: “Niki Lauda and Alain Prost only thought about pilots. And now Vettel rides a rainbow bike, Lewis does human rights and Norris does mental health. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but in my opinion it cannot be imposed on others who use the possibilities of sport.

I come from Arab culture. I am an internationalist and a Muslim. Am I imposing my beliefs on other people? There are 16 nationalities in my federation in the UAE! Name me at least one federation with so many nationalities. There are more than 34% women and representatives of seven religions. And there are more Christians than Muslims. And I’m proud of it.

But I will not impose my beliefs. Rules are there to follow. Including the jewelry. But I didn’t invent them.”

The FIA president’s words sparked sharp criticism on social networks, so before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he softened the rhetoric somewhat by publishing another statement.

Mohammed bin Sulayem: “As a racing driver I have always believed that sport is a catalyst for progress in society. That is why promoting sustainable development, diversity and inclusiveness is one of the main priorities of my mandate. Likewise, I appreciate the efforts of all riders and champions for a brighter future. †

Hamilton, Vettel and Norris have not yet responded.
