Red Bull Racing drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez qualified second and third at Albert Park. The team admitted to having speed issues on a quick lap, but expects to come back in the race.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “We’ve been dealing with problems all weekend. I was behind Charles, but second place isn’t such a bad result. The machine has more potential than we could demonstrate today.
I didn’t feel 100% comfortable in the car. We tried adjusting the settings, but it didn’t bring the improvements we hoped for. I hope we can do better tomorrow.
Our car is fast in racing conditions because it behaves more stable. I hope we do well tomorrow.”
Sergio Perez (3rd): “I think qualifying went well. In the second session, because of the red flags, it was not possible to experiment with tires, which prevented us from choosing the optimal strategy.
In the final I was full of fuel for three laps, but in the end it turned out that the strategy of two fast laps in a row gives no advantage over one fast lap. The decision to add more fuel was a mistake and cost me several tenths. On the other hand, Charles Leclerc managed to make an excellent circle – he was able to put it down, but I couldn’t.
I hope the race will be tighter and we will make it harder for Ferrari, choose the right strategy and enjoy the fight. I love the car – every time we drive we learn something new and in tomorrow’s race I want to take a big step forward.”
Christian Horner, Team boss: “Both riders did a great job. At times it looked like they could take pole position, but Charles drove a big circle and stayed out of reach of us. However, we will try to stay ahead of Ferrari in the race.
Max locked the tires on a fast lap, leading to a three-tenth loss. Sergio had a brief power loss on lap one and then lost tenth because of the fuel we put in to give him three laps. Despite all this, we have second and third place at the start – we accept this result.
I think with full tanks we will be in better shape and thanks to the three DRS zones we have an interesting race ahead.”
