IndyCar responds to threats against Callum Ilott

After the IndyCar race in Long Beach, fans of the Argentine Agustino Canapino on social networks Callum Ilott brought down a whole series of threats, and very serious ones, since British racer Juncos Hollinger Racing was to blame for the teammate’s retirement.

We talked about this situation and how Ilott himself reacted to what happened. Since this is a totally atypical story for IndyCar, it did not go unnoticed by the organizers of the American series.

“Over the past 24 hours, some of our riders have been the target of a disrespectful and unacceptable stream of abuse online. This behavior has no place in our sport,” IndyCar said in an official statement. “The core of our races will always be fierce on-track competition and real competitiveness, so it’s important to demonstrate and celebrate exactly these qualities, with full respect for the participants in our competitions.

IndyCar is a community that should always strive to build mutual support and understanding.”

Some drivers also reacted to what is happening, notably Mexican Pato O’Ward, who plays for Arrow McLaren: “You can have different opinions about races and championships, this is completely natural. In my opinion, it is this kind of disagreement that makes our sport so interesting.

But there is a line that should never be crossed. I think it’s important to always remember that words have power, so it’s extremely frustrating that some people deliberately use them to insult, despise, threaten and humiliate others. This is absolutely unacceptable.

We are all human beings, and don’t we have the right to make a mistake, to make a wrong decision?.. I urge everyone to think, choose words and, before speaking seriously weigh the consequences.”
