It was a hot Friday morning in Baku, the asphalt condition of the city track left a lot to be desired, but the racers weren’t in the pits – everyone left in the first minutes.
On the eighth minute virtual safety car mode was announced – Mick Schumacher’s car stopped on track due to a leak in the cooling system. The assembly of a new car for Mick after the accident in Monaco had just been completed – and something was not taken into account. As a result, the Haas F1 driver missed the first practice.
Hamilton drove into the safety pocket with no impact on the car, Stroll hit the barrier in Turn 15 – the mechanics checked the suspension of the right rear wheel. On the 15th minute, Latifi stopped at Turn 5, the car smoked – it had to be evacuated, for which the virtual safety car mode was again announced – it also did not take off again. Gasly went into the safety pocket twice in Turn 16.
After the session, Verstappen turned around in the 15th corner.
The best time was shown by Sergio Pérez with a lap time of 1:45.476.
