In the summer of 2021, James Ellison left the position of technical director of the Mercedes team and took over as technical director, focusing on solving strategic problems. Ellison’s place was taken by Mike Elliott, but today it became known about changes in the structure of the team.
Mercedes has decided to swap the positions of Elliott and Allison and return the position of technical director to James, according to Racingnews365. This decision is related to Ellott’s position – Mike felt that his competence was not suitable for the position of Technical Director.
As Chief Technical Officer, Mike Elliott will work full-time, while Ellison will devote three days a week to this direction. Despite the increased workload as technical director of the F1 team, James will continue to be involved in the Ineos Britannia project, linked to the yacht team of the same name in the America’s Cup.
Besides the job change between Ellison and Elliott, there have been other role changes at Mercedes. Chief Designer John Owen now focuses solely on development, while his deputy, Giacomo Tortora, has been promoted to Engineering Director and will take over all administrative work related to the design department’s operation and development, helping the team to adapt to work under budget constraints.
