Emerson Fittipaldi: Alonso can win in Monaco

Emerson Fittipaldi, the legendary Brazilian racer, two-time world champion, remains actively interested in Formula 1, closely follows all the events on the track and believes that Fernando Alonso is well able to increase the score of his victories this year. He said this in an interview with the Spanish newspaper AS…

Emerson Fittipaldi: “Despite the obvious superiority of Red Bull Racing, I like how the first three races went, as the teams’ forces have leveled off somewhat. Aston Martin is not that far behind the leaders, Ferrari should add quite a bit, and Mercedes I think too. In fact, you can already see that they have made some improvements.

In general, the balance of power is more balanced, although Red Bull is still a few steps ahead.

Of course, Aston Martin has to be considered the main surprise of the championship so far. Fernando Alonso is the perfect driver who knows how to squeeze everything out of his car. I am convinced that three podium finishes in a row are not a coincidence, not separate bright glimpses. This year will go very fast and will bring many surprises.

Fernando has all the necessary qualities of an ideal racer: he is naturally gifted, he is in excellent physical and mental condition, and he passionately loves what he does.

Personally, when I was already in the US, I had my last victory at the age of 47, and Alonso can also reach this age and continue to perform at the highest level. He longs for victories, is purposeful, is distinguished by perseverance and strength of character. Why he failed to win races in the last ten years is also understandable: Fernando drove non-competitive cars.

But I believe he will be one of the Monaco Grand Prix favorites this year and contenders for the win. We know that on this track the speed advantage is equal, so anything can happen there. As always there will be a real battle in qualifying because pole position on this track is crucial and I have no doubt that Fernando will try to win it.

I think there are only two problems that can stand in his way: Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. But if Alonso is lucky, he can still win this race. In general, I believe in Aston Martin, because a lot of money has been invested in this team, highly qualified specialists work there now and they do everything right. I think Aston Martin will compete in the top group this season.”

Fittipaldi also stressed that in modern Formula 1 he lacks a Brazilian racer: “In the past, the Brazilians always played in the World Championship. But now there are several worthy candidates. Felipe Drugovic works at Aston Martin as a reserve driver and my grandson Pietro does the same job at Haas. Both may get a chance in the future.”
