Sébastien Buemi, a true Formula E veteran, set a new electric series record today in Berlin as the Swiss Envision Racing driver took his 16th pole position. He now has one win more in qualifying matches than Jean-Eric Vergne, the two-time Formula E champion.
In the qualifying final ahead of the first of two races in Berlin, Buemi battled for pole with factory Jaguar team driver Sam Bird, and it should be stressed that Envision uses the exact same Jaguar I-TYPE 6 powerplants, so it’s understandable that both were about in the same position.
Sebastien, however, turned out to be a tenth and slightly faster than the opponent. Bird and his team weren’t too upset though: for the Briton this is the track’s best qualifying result and he has never started from the front row in Berlin.
Although Buemi took pole, he admitted that the result could have been better if the mistakes at turns 9 and 10 had not been made. This is Sebastien’s second pole this season. The last time he managed to start from first position and win was a long time ago – in New York in 2019, when he was still playing for Nissan e.dams. By the way, while this was his last victory in Formula E.
“I’m a bit surprised to have won pole,” said Buemi. – I’m willing to admit that I didn’t have the best lap because I made some mistakes in the last two corners. But it was incredibly cool to hear the congratulations on the radio from the team, who immediately started to loudly celebrate their victory in qualifying.
This achievement is all the more valuable as I won pole after a hand injury suffered during the stage in Sao Paulo. The last few weeks have been very difficult because of the injured arm, and also because the addition of a family to our family was expected, but we didn’t know exactly when this would happen. But everything turned out very well!”
It remains to add that quite recently the third son was born in the family of Sebastien and his wife Jennifer.
