Just before the start of Sunday’s Formula E race in Berlin, several environmental activists from the Last Generation group managed to enter the starting field and tried to disrupt or at least disrupt the competition. It was this organization that took responsibility for what they had done, but, as we said, nothing came of this venture.
The demonstrators were first driven off the track by the security service and marshals and then handed over to the Berlin police. These few people unexpectedly climbed over the fence, jumped to the starting field, when not all riders had time to take their positions, and tried to stick to the asphalt, but the action was immediately stopped.
The protesters wore T-shirts with Last Generation logos and relevant calls. After they were detained, messages appeared on social networks on behalf of this organization stating the following: “We are on the Formula E circuit to raise the alarm. It is time to slow down, because we are going full speed down the highway to climate hell.”
The start of the race was only delayed by six or seven minutes, after which the race started and proceeded without complications.
Jake Dennis, who finished second today, said after the finish: “These people don’t know what they want to achieve, but it seems they were trying to sit on the track and create some confusion. I was impressed with how quickly the situation was neutralized and the race continued.
It’s good they did it when the race didn’t start, and it allowed us to wait and see. I think all the riders did well because they stayed calm…”
Nico Müller, who started the race second and was close to the scene of the incident, added: “I saw people running onto the track – that’s exactly what happened, and if they’re there the race can’t are held. Everything else doesn’t really bother me. I thought the situation was ridiculous, and it’s unlikely these people knew what they were doing.
Presumably the general opinion was expressed by António Felix da Costa, the 2020 Formula E champion, who said: “Our series is probably the most unsuitable racing category to do this. Formula E is the most environmentally friendly series ever.”
