Silverstone hosts complain about asphalt

Someday, to be exact, in 2018-2019. we’ve talked repeatedly about the entire tarmac epic in Silvertown. This coating had to be reapplied only a year after it was completely replaced because the company involved in this work handled the matter inappropriately.

Then, after the 2018 British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton literally said this: “The people they hired to lay the tarmac did the worst job in the world.”

And now the owners of the Silverstone circuit have sued Aggregate Industries and demanded damages, which they estimate at nearly £8 million.

The amount was made up of several components: the cost of updating the tarmac, which had to be shifted twice, the losses incurred due to the British MotoGP Championship organizers refusing to race on this track after problems in 2018, and legal costs.

Aggregate Industries is accused of the fact that after the works of this company the road surface remained uneven, cracks immediately appeared in some sections and the drainage system became much less effective.

As a result, there were five accidents at Silverstone in the days of the 2018 MotoGP stage, most notably during qualifying, which took place on a wet track, Spanish motorcycle racer Tito Rabat suffered a multiple fracture of his right leg.

After all these incidents, FIM, the International Motorcycle Federation, has revoked Silverstone’s license, resulting in losses of around £3.5 million, and the circuit owners had to invite another company, which changed the tarmac again in 2019.

The services of this company, Tarmac Trading Ltd., cost 3.7 million pounds. And now Silverstone plans to sue Aggregate Industries for all financial losses in court. Together with the legal costs, the amount is £7,933,124.
