Daniel Ricciardo first appeared in the paddock at the Australian Grand Prix, but had recently started work on a simulator based on Red Bull Racing, and we said he was enjoying his new role as reserve driver.
According to Ricciardo, he believes this is a temporary situation and hopes to return to racing, but takes great pleasure in the fact that he now has many more opportunities to connect with friends and family and lead a less selfish lifestyle .
“I just spend time with my family, including my niece and nephew,” Daniel was quoted by the Australian edition of Speedcafe. “My nephew is learning to ride a bike now and it’s great to be on the farm with him, teach him a little bit, watch him fall and get mad at himself.
My take on this situation is that my family and friends have been helping me for the last 17 years since I started traveling (Ricciardo started competing in the European Junior Series in 2006). I never paid enough attention to it because it is clear that I was just continuing my career. I only thought about myself, and now I spend more time with them because I feel like I owe them something.
But I like all this very much, because I managed to renew relationships with many people. Don’t get me wrong: I’m not complaining, but that was the previous part of my life. And now is also a very important period, because all these people – both my family and friends I grew up with – did not let me escape reality.
We all know what Formula 1 is with its crazy lifestyle, which is sometimes far from reality and doesn’t look like it, so I know these people helped me be myself. And if relations with any of them were broken, I would be sad, because it was these people who were with me from the very beginning.
So now everything is going very well. Many of these people already have children, and to be honest, I couldn’t even remember all of their names. In general, life flies very fast … I can finally devote more time to them, I am interested in how they live, because they have always been interested in how I live. I just like that now that I’m not just thinking about myself.
