The Formula 1 Commission has unanimously approved the new format for sprint race weekends, according to the Royal Racing website.
The proposals were agreed with all interested parties. As part of the sprint stages on Friday, free practice will take place, as well as the traditional qualification for the race. Saturday – qualification for the sprint (Sprint Shootout) and the sprint race itself, which will no longer determine the position of the drivers on the starting grid for the race on Sunday.
The first segment of the sprint qualification will last 12 minutes, the second stage – after the elimination of five riders – 10 minutes, the third stage for the remaining 10 riders – 8 minutes.
– Following discussions at the F1 Commission meeting in February, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), Formula 1 and the teams have set themselves the task of exploring how the sprint format can be improved to to increase the level of intensity on the track during the weekend by doing a maximum of sessions where there is a sporting result. Although the time spent on training runs is reduced, this provides more incentive for participants to go for intensive rides on Saturdays, the message states.
The changes will come into effect from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix (April 28-30). Later in the season, sprint events are scheduled for Austria, Belgium, Qatar, Austin (USA) and Brazil.
