Norris: Baku needs confidence in a car

McLaren driver Lando Norris on the team’s form and success factors on the city circuit in Baku…

Lando Norris: “The balance of power is constantly changing. Somehow Alfa Romeo was ahead of us. In fact, their cars were probably faster than us all season. Sometimes the Haas were faster than us.

It’s important that our car was fast on all tracks, except Bahrain, and that we could fight for points everywhere. And in Monaco we were ahead of Mercedes. In the middle group there was a close battle, we were third, fourth, fifth in terms of speed. I’ll be happy if we’re at the head of this group.

Success factors in Baku? High top speed on straight lines. But the most important thing is confidence in the car, especially when braking. Here you can gain a lot back on braking, but the chance of a mistake is very high, as on all street tracks.

To position the car on the track the way you want, to brake where you want, you need absolute confidence in the car. This allows you to maximize the width of the track and gradually find the limits of the possible.

The track in Monaco this year has been a very difficult test for the drivers and equipment given the many bumps on the brakes and with this year’s machines. Never before has it been so difficult in Monaco. Here the situation is not as critical, different settings, less downforce – there should not be such problems as two weeks ago, but the Baku track is still very difficult.
