Senna named “patron of Brazilian sport”

In Brazil, Ayrtona Senna, the great racer, three-time world champion, has long enjoyed the status of national hero, but the government of the country decided to perpetuate his name in a special way.

An official decree was issued, signed by Vice President Geraldo Alcmina, naming Senna the “Patron of Brazilian Sports” (Patrono do Desporto Brasileiro).

Law no. 14.559 of April 25, 2023 was published yesterday in the government newspaper Diário Oficial and came into force from that moment.

There are some great people in Brazil whose services to their homeland are considered so important that they have been officially made patrons of the area that made them famous: for example, the writer Joaquín Maria Machado de Assis, the Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont and the architect Oscar have a similar status: Niemeyer.

The proposal to immortalize the name Senna in this way was put forward by one of the deputies of the Brazilian Parliament in 2019 and now the time has come: Senna has become the 31st national hero on this list.

After the death of the legendary racer at the Grand Prix of San Marino in Imola on May 1, 1994, no other representative of Brazilian motorsport could even come close to Ayrton Senna in terms of performance. Over the past almost three decades, admirers of his talent have become more and more, although the younger generation of fans only know him from videos of his performances, from books and from the wonderful documentary “Senna”.

Also last November, Ayrton Senna was recognized as an honorary citizen of Brazil.
