It was announced on the eve that Ferrari sports director Laurent Mekis will replace Franz Tost as head of AlphaTauri at the end of 2023. At a press conference in Baku, Scuderia driver Carlos Sainz commented on Mekis’ imminent departure from the team.
Carlos Sainz: “I can only talk about my personal experience, but I think Laurent is a great guy and a very strong specialist. He is taking a step forward in his career so I can only be happy for him. I suppose if you’re offered such a high position, you accept.
Our team not only loses employees, but also hires new ones. We are doing our best to reorganize to strengthen the team. I am sure that people will come to us who will enable us to make up for the losses of the past few weeks.
Perhaps the loss of employees sometimes goes faster than the arrival of new ones, but I have confidence in Frederic Wasser’s approach. I see what he is doing and I am sure we have good prospects.”
Carlos Sainz said the team worked hard during the April break and decided to take further steps to modernize the car.
“After a three-week break, we know the car much better,” says Carlos. – The team did a lot of analysis and determined the direction of the modernization. The task for these three weeks was to identify our weaknesses and the strengths of our closest rivals and do everything possible to return to the fray as soon as possible.
This weekend we have about the same chances as in Australia, although a different set-up of the car was needed. In the last stage we were fast enough in the race, although there were problems with that before. I hope we continue to move in this direction and be more competitive this weekend.”
