Alex Albon: Let’s see how many others will add

Williams rider Alex Albon likes the new weekend formula as teams in the middle of the pack are more likely to succeed as there is a chance that one of the rivals will make mistakes on a tight schedule.

Alex Albon: “The teams in the middle of the peloton will have more cases, because on Friday someone may not work perfectly and we will only benefit from that. This gives an opportunity to those who can immediately show good speed.

On the one hand, Baku, Monza and other routes where special aerodynamic efficiency is required fit our car, on the other hand, almost all turns here are 90 degrees and must be taken in third gear. In general, I will not say that the strengths of our car manifest themselves at low speeds. Of course we hope to be fast on the straights, but at the same time we have to try to keep the loss of time in the corners to a minimum.

I made a mistake in Melbourne, but if you look at our work this year as a whole, you can see we’ve made good progress. Overall in Australia we were generally “best of the rest” ie not to mention top four teams. I think everyone at Williams is optimistic, we are happy to compete again with some teams in the middle of the pack. I hope this will be the case in Baku, and we just have to make the most of this opportunity.

At the same time, many teams are already bringing technical innovations to the races, including some of our direct rivals who have prepared something for the stage in Baku, so the modernization race has already started. But so far we’re taking pretty confident positions, and that’s nice. We’re not preparing any significant updates for this weekend, so we’ll see how many others can add and assess the situation.
