The third practice in Baku, like the first, coincided with the start of the Grand Prix on Sunday, allowing the teams and riders to work in similar conditions, especially as the weather was stable over the weekend.
The start of the session had to be postponed due to the damaged protective barrier in the Formula 2 race full of incidents in the first corner. The guardrail was damaged on the last lap, they didn’t have time to replace it at the start of practice, so the riders left the track with a 15 minute delay but worked a full hour. Qualifying also starts fifteen minutes later – according to the rules, a minimum of two hours must elapse between the third practice and the qualification.
The session went smoothly, there were far fewer mistakes and departures than the day before. Bottas ran into the safety pocket at Turn 3 and was unable to turn right away, but then he engaged reverse and continued on. Leclerc ended up in the pocket after a braking error in Turn 15, but took off immediately.
In the closing minutes, Alonso avoided Verstappen’s fast circle as Max encountered a group of slow cars returning to the pits.
Sergio Perez set the fastest time with a lap time of 1:43.170.
