Last weekend, Lewis Hamilton visited Donington circuit for the British Touring Championship race, which his younger brother Nicholas was taking part in, and the seven-time world champion stressed that it was an important event for him.
Of course, he also touched on other topics related to the Mercedes team and the challenges ahead of the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton: “I am very proud of my brother as he finds his own budget to race every year and is in a sport that is extremely difficult for people with disabilities to get into. In his life he had to overcome many difficulties, but he continues to fight, and in one of the races last weekend, Nicholas took sixth place.
And I just stood in the crowd of fans, watched the race and rejoiced – no one knew I was there, and I just jumped from the emotions that overwhelmed me and supported my brother.
Hamilton also commented on James Ellison’s return to the position of technical director of Mercedes: “James has always remained in the team, although it is clear that in recent years he has paid more attention to other projects. As he has now returned to his previous position and will be working with Mike Elliott, this will make the team even stronger.
James is an incredibly experienced specialist and his return will help the team meet the challenges we face, not just on the track, but off track as well.
Asked about the challenges ahead, Lewis said: “I’m pretty confident we can fight for the top three again. Behind the scenes the team did a great job and the race in Australia was great for us, although we had to work hard to get a result like that. It will not be easy to repeat it because the opponents are very fast, but I hope we will also claim good results.
As the format of the weekend has changed, perhaps the most exciting stage of the season awaits us. We’ll see how it goes, but I really like these changes. It will be even more difficult for everyone, but we are all on an equal footing and Baku is a really good place to try out the new format because you can overtake here and the races on this track are always very interesting.”
