Lando Norris: I like the new format of the weekend

At a press conference in Baku, Lando Norris spoke about how he spent the break between races, also emphasizing that he likes the new sprint weekend format, which now has two qualifiers.

Lando Norris: “I had a great break between races. For the Easter weekend I returned to my native Glastonbury, staying with my parents and spending the rest of the time with friends, as I moved between the UK and Monaco.

I was watching the Masters Tournament, a golf tournament – it’s a pity that Tiger Woods is no longer competing in this tournament due to injury, as this could be the last time he competes in such competitions.

Of course I also spent time training and preparing for the upcoming races. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I think the weekend in Australia definitely worked out a lot better for us. In the first two Grand Prix we were simply unlucky. It was immediately clear that the car needed to be improved and the level we are at now is the level we wanted to be at at the start of the season.

But many other teams have also prepared new items for the Azerbaijani leg of the season, so we are catching up, and to meet the challenges McLaren faces we need to maintain a higher pace of modernization compared to rivals.

This weekend we will try to better understand the characteristics and capabilities of the machine, and on the one hand we must take a noticeable step forward, on the other hand the scale of our progress will be a little more modest as the rivals also do not stand still . I am very pleased that the team has prepared this series of technical innovations, because until now the potential of the MCL60 has not been fully revealed.”

In addition, Lando commented on the weekend’s new format with two separate qualifiers setting the grid for Saturday’s Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix.

“I expect drivers to be able to take a little more risk now in the course of the sprint,” said the McLaren driver. – However, no one canceled the budget limit, and at least I don’t want to damage the car, so no one will do anything stupid. We especially want to prevent this, because in Baku we have to try to increase the speed of the car as much as possible.

But in general I like this format of the weekend, in my opinion it is better than before. I like it precisely because there are now two qualifiers. And while the pressure is certainly higher, the fun will also be greater.”
