McLaren racers estimate the results of Friday’s qualifying in Baku slightly differently. If Lando Norris is angry that he only showed the seventh result, although he could have moved a few positions higher, then Oscar Piastri is already happy that he made it to the last session.
Lando Norris (7th): “If they had told me before qualifying that I would be seventh, I would certainly agree, because this is a really good result. The novelties work effectively, the car showed itself well on this track, although it seems to me that I could have managed better.
Today we could have climbed up to 4th position, so to be honest I’m a little disappointed. Together with the team we didn’t make the right decisions, but otherwise the impressions of qualifying are generally positive.
Still, it’s great that the team prepared high-quality technical innovations that worked straight away, so I’m confident in the car and everything is going smoothly so far. We’ve tried to reduce the drag on the MCL60 and it’s set for less downforce for this track. The new bottom is quite effective, but now we need to add some nuances.
The Baku circuit suits us well, also because our car can brake well, so today a whole combination of factors worked, but we still had to move up to higher positions. Tomorrow, however, we have chances for a good result and we will try to get more points.”
Oscar Pistri (10th): “It’s great that we both made it to the final of today’s qualifying, it’s a good result for the team. Although it’s a bit disappointing that I had the same time as Lance Stroll (but the Canadian Aston Martin driver did his lap earlier, so he moved up to 9th position). In any case, this is a good day, although not the easiest.
I am happy that I made it to the final, but now I will try to prepare better for tomorrow. The weekend schedule is very tight, but it’s going well. In all the remaining sessions there is something to fight for, it motivates and I am already looking forward to getting back behind the wheel tomorrow morning to take part in Saturday’s qualifying.
But today turned out to be even better than we expected, but now our job is to try and get higher speeds.
