After the Monaco race, Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen were emotionally critical of the new Pirelli rain tires. At a press conference on Saturday, the head of the company’s motorsport division, Mario Isola, disagreed with this criticism.
Mario Isola: “Rain tires are always difficult to approach and the Monaco track is not the best place to evaluate their performance.
We only have one rain link and one intermediate link that should work on all 22 tracks, we were looking for the best compromise to meet these requirements.
We have very few opportunities to work on rain and intermediate tire tests. We recently did these tests with Ferrari at Fiorano and no other tests are planned at the moment.
We’re working with the FIA and the teams and trying to find some extra opportunities, but if you don’t have the opportunity to work on the tests, you can’t change anything. We have to wait for other rain races to draw conclusions, to understand in which direction we have to work.”
