Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez qualified second and third in Baku. Both Red Bull Racing drivers commented that their starting positions could have been higher, but the car’s speed at a distance leaves a chance to recoup.
Max Verstappen (2nd): “It is always difficult to set a fast lap on this circuit. On the second attempt we tried a slightly different approach on the pit lap, which probably contributed to the fact that the fast lap wasn’t perfect.
In the final I gave my best and rode the lap to the limit – it’s not easy to do everything perfectly in such conditions. I have second place though, we know our car is very fast in the race, so it’s not too bad.
I always want to start ahead of everyone, but I have to overtake one car.”
Sergio Perez (3rd): “The first part of qualifying turned out to be quite difficult due to the large number of red flags. We spent the whole session on one set of tires because we didn’t want to spend more in the first part. Given that we had little time in practice, it was difficult to clear the circle and move on, but the team did a great job.
I’m a little disappointed with third because I felt I could have done better, but my lap wasn’t clean. But on this track you can overtake, so I have a good starting position.
We knew the Ferraris would be very fast on this track and we knew they would be the biggest threat to our team. I think Charles had a great lap.”
