Franz Tost explained the reasons for the resignation

A few days ago, AlphaTauri announced that Franz Tost, who led the Faenza team since 2006, will retire at the end of the season. In Baku, the 67-year-old Austrian explained the reasons for the decision.

Franz Tost: “This is my decision, which I started thinking about and discussing with Dietrich Mateschitz about two years ago. When I was younger I always reminded myself not to glue myself to the executive chair. We need to clear the way for young people – smarter, more creative and more motivated.

In the seventh decade, it’s time to say goodbye. I love Formula 1, but for me this story ends. As a replacement we invited two fantastic specialists: Peter Bayer and Laurent Mekis. I think now is the best time to leave Formula 1. I am happy to see Peter and Laurent coming, as I expect the team to take a big step forward with them.”

In 2024, Toast will remain with AlphaTauri as a consultant. Franz explained that he would not interfere in the work of new leaders: “I will not look over my shoulder to see what Peter and Laurent are doing. They are very good professionals and know what to do. I’ll be there when they first start but after a month or so I’ll be 100% on the back burner.

I’m not one to tell anyone how to work – they already know. I’m confident they’ll do better than me, so I’d better keep my mouth shut.”

In Baku, Ferrari boss Frédéric Vasseur said the team had not yet discussed the terms of his move to AlphaTauri with Laurent Mekis. Franz Tost has no doubt that the parties will come to an agreement and Mekis will start work in Faenza at the end of the year.

“The matter is up to Laurent and Frederic, but Red Bull will also participate,” Toast continues. – I think Oliver Mintzlaff will negotiate with the CEO of Ferrari and they will find a solution.

I expect Laurent to come to us at least by the end of the year. Otherwise, the team will still have Peter and a consultant in my person. However, I do not plan to go to the first races next year. Ferrari and Laurent will resolve the matter between themselves, it is none of our business.”
