Charles Leclerc started from pole position in the Baku sprint, but finished second, behind Sergio Pérez on lap eight. The Ferrari driver said the car’s speed didn’t allow him to fight for victory with Red Bull Racing, so he’s happy with second.
Charles Leclerc: “The sprint confirmed what we thought: Red Bull has the advantage on the race distance. However, we cannot forget how far behind we were just two stages ago, so now we can say that the team has taken a step forward.
Of course we are not yet in the positions we want to be, but if victory is out of reach then we have to earn as many points as possible. I couldn’t do more today, so I’m happy with second place. In the race I will do my best to fight for victory, although Red Bull is faster.
Today I didn’t really struggle with Sergio because I wanted to save the tyres, whose heavy wear is our weak point. I tried to stay behind him in the DRS zone, but towards the finish I fell behind due to the degradation of the rubber. Let’s see if we can fix something tomorrow.”
