Alfa Romeo opted for a different strategy for their drivers in Saturday’s sprint – and the option to start at Soft was unsuccessful…
Guanyu Zhou (12th) “The car was fast, I trusted it – this is a good sign for tomorrow’s race. After qualifying yesterday, we chose two different strategy options to maximize our chances and choose tires for tomorrow. With our starting positions it was difficult to count on points, but we wanted to collect more information.
In my case the strategy worked, the Medium tires were effective, I was able to keep Gasly behind me even without DRS. We have collected data on tire performance over a long distance and look forward to the race with optimism. The goal is to regain positions and earn points. It worked in Melbourne, and it should work here – you just need a bit of luck.”
Valttery Bottas: “Today it was necessary to work as a team, so we did. In general we were faster than in qualifying and taking part in the sprint allowed us to collect important information for tomorrow’s race.
I started on Soft and Zhou chose Medium. In the end I didn’t succeed, I tried to fight, but the riders on Medium turned out to be faster in the end. It’s good that we tried different options and now we know what works in tomorrow’s race.”
