On the first lap of the sprint in Baku, in the battle for position, an incident occurred – George Russell attacked Max Verstappen aggressively, there was contact – and the Red Bull Racing car sustained minor damage.
After the finish, Max emotionally expressed everything he thinks about the Briton’s actions, and George spoke on the Sky Sports F1 broadcast about his point of view.
George Russell: “I was in the corner and I think riders understand the risks very well when they are out. I’m here to fight and win, I won’t give in just because he’s leading the championship.
I was very surprised when he tried to stay out. It’s a street circuit, he has a lot to lose, but none of our contacts were intentional. I did my best to get the corner clean – and was very surprised that he decided to fight me in the outer radius.
Honestly, I was surprised he was so angry. He still finished third. Max is experienced enough to understand that if you’re attacking an opponent in the outer radius, there’s always a risk of someone inside crashing into your car.
