Wolff: It’s important to understand why the race was uninteresting

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes it is important to understand the reasons for the lack of overtaking maneuvers at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix…

Toto Wolff: “I think after such a race weekend it is not worth talking about the situation as a whole, that we are going in the wrong direction and urgent changes are needed. It is important to understand why the race turned out to be uninteresting. Clearly, the two cars with the speed advantage led the way and broke away by 22 seconds at the finish.

I never found out which team of Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes was faster because they were all stuck in traffic. There was no difference between Leclerc and Alonso, between Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes on a free track. There are two Red Bull cars, then three teams and then the rest.

The settings of our machines were far from ideal. We realized already in the first practice session that we were going in the wrong direction, but it was too late – the car ended up in a closed park, which we cannot change. And this was true for everyone. Everyone took part in this gambling game, someone guessed and got an advantage, but someone didn’t.”
