The stewards of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix have recommended a revision of one of the rules leading to an investigation into an incident involving Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen at the end of the first qualifying session.
The first session was interrupted by red flags due to an accident by Lance Stroll. Pending the resumption of qualifying, the drivers lined up at the pit lane exit, preventing the Haas drivers closest to the exit from entering the pit lane. As a result, Magnussen and Schumacher had to wait for all the other drivers to leave the pit lane and only then leave the pits.
It was then that the violation occurred: Kevin entered the pitlane first and immediately stopped to let Mick Schumacher through, whose box was physically closer to the exit of the pitlane than Kevin’s. As a rule, however, drivers must exit the pit lane in the order they exited the pit lane. Kevin broke this rule by letting his partner have his way.
The stewards of the Azerbaijani Grand Prix have not penalized Haas for the violation, citing a similar verdict against Williams when the team’s drivers violated the rule during the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix. In the published decision, the stewards advised against the rule. reconsider as it does not apply in such situations.
