In Baku, Charles Leclerc won the qualifier, and Carlos Sainz qualified fourth…
Charles Leclerc (1st): “Winning qualifying is always great, but pole position in Baku was even more fun – it was unexpected.
Our rivals in the first and second part of qualifying seemed stronger, but in the decisive attempt in the final I managed to get it all together. I don’t think I could play many hundredths more, I’m happy with my fast lap.
Now I’m looking forward to the race. I like street circuits, it’s especially important for me to win a race like that. Tomorrow a lot will be decided by tire work and we have done a good job with that over the past two races. I am sure that tomorrow we will work as everyone wants.”
Carlos Sainz (4th): “I’m not completely happy with the result, but overall the day went well. I felt comfortable in the car, improving with each session and showing the best time for the last attempt.
The battle today was very tight, I understood that I had to take more risks in the last attempt. In this case, sometimes everything works out and sometimes, like today, you lose the opportunity to achieve more.
Unlike other circuits, in Baku the starting position is not decisive and anything can happen tomorrow. I will attack and try to regain positions during the race to get a good result, and I thank the team for the well prepared cars. Congratulations to the whole team and Charles on pole!”
