In Baku, both AlphaTauri riders reached the qualifying final for the second time in the season – Pierre Gasly set the sixth fastest time, Yuki Tsunoda – eighth. The team expects two cars to score points in Sunday’s race.
Pierre Gasly (6th): “I’m very happy because this is my best qualifying of the season. I don’t think we could have hoped for more – it’s great that both cars are in the top ten. The team did a great job, the car is fast on this track, so we had a strong qualifying.
Any result is possible in Baku – we were convinced of that when we climbed the podium last year. It’s easy to make a mistake on this track and there are usually a lot of red flags in the race, but we’re in a good position to take advantage of the potential ahead.
Compared to other teams we have one set of hard tires while the others have two, but we’ll see what we can come up with with the strategy. In any case, I am happy with our speed today.”
Yuki Tsunoda (8th): “Good day – I’m very happy with the result of qualifying. I was lucky to get to the final but I did a good lap on an old set of tires so I’m happy with my result.
The team has done a fantastic job, so I want to say a huge thank you to everyone. I hope tomorrow we can confirm the speed and earn points with two cars.”
