Mario Isola: In Miami, the asphalt shifted

For the fifth stage of the season in Miami, Pirelli tire manufacturers bring the “average” trio of compositions – C2, C3 and C4. The head of the Italian company’s racing division, Mario Isola, explained that this choice was prompted by the expected high temperature in Florida.

Mario Isola: “Formula 1 comes to Miami this weekend for the first of three US races on this year’s calendar, along with the now traditional Austin race and the highly anticipated Las Vegas race. It’s not the first time three races have been held in the United States in one year, but never before has our sport had such an effect on the American public. This is largely to the credit of Liberty Media.

Last year, on the circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium, the tires behaved as expected on asphalt, which had specific characteristics mainly related to its very high “micro-roughness”. The track has been completely tarmacked ahead of this year’s race and during the usual pre-weekend checks we will check whether there has been any significant change in performance.

At the Miami circuit, the cars have to be set to a medium level of downforce, because there are many corners and a very long straight. We brought the “average” trio of C2, C3 and C4 compositions, also because we expect very high temperatures – last year the asphalt warmed up to almost +60C.”
