Mercedes continues to experiment with the car

In the Baku stage, Mercedes continued to have problems building the car on the straights, but the team thinks they will better understand how to eliminate them after the Canadian Grand Prix. The head of Mercedes Toto Wolff said engineers plan to conduct several experiments in the next phase in Montreal that should suggest further direction for the development of the W13.

“I fully admit that if we could work on the tests for a day or two, we would take a big step forward,” Wolff said by Racefans. “But we don’t have a chance like everyone else. Next weekend we will experiment more. We can afford it, because at the moment we don’t claim to win the race and we are behind the top teams.

During the sessions on the track we will not focus on optimizing the car for specific conditions, but on understanding the whole picture. This is exactly the task we have for the race in Baku and the stage in Montreal.

In Barcelona, the team took a big step forward. In other words, we have a solution to the problem of building a track with smooth asphalt and no bumps – we understand how to set up a car in such conditions.

In Montreal we will be able to get a sense of working on a different type of track – where there are a lot of bumps and high curbs. I expect that after Montreal we will understand the car better. We know why the car lacks speed, but we don’t know what the best solution would be. That’s why we keep experimenting.”
