Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, giving Red Bull Racing its fifth consecutive win in the last eight races. Confirmed the success of Red Bull Racing Sergio Perez, who finished second. In the Constructors’ Championship, the team increased its lead over Ferrari to 80 points.
Max Verstappen (1st): “We had a very fast pace in the race. From the start I was behind Charles Leclerc in the DRS zone, but I was a bit short of top speed to overtake and in the last two corners it was difficult to get close behind him.
Ferrari decided to make a pit stop at the moment of the virtual safety car, while we stayed on track. It would be interesting to know how fast we would have been on the Hard tires compared to Ferrari, but we won’t know because of their retirement. After the race it came down to monitoring the condition of the rubber.
During the race, the team was constantly telling me the time I had to do laps. I had everything under control, so it was only to do laps with the necessary time.
It is important to keep scoring points. It doesn’t matter if someone stops because of an accident or reliability issues, it’s still zero points. At the start of the season we had problems, but we learned and improved. We have to keep working in the same vein as the season is long.”
Sergio Perez (2nd): “During the race I had some problems. First of all, we had a misunderstanding with the team – we had to drive into the pits during the virtual safety car. If I had done that, the race could have looked different.
After the race resumed, my pace dropped sharply. I don’t know what happened – maybe the rear tires got too cold, but it affected my race. Max was much faster at the time.
After the pit stop and the breakdown of the Ferrari, the task was to maintain a certain pace and bring the car to the finish. It’s clear that Max was faster than me today and deserved to win.
We have to learn from these races. Today we didn’t do everything perfectly, but at the same time we were able to get results. I hope we will noticeably increase the race pace in Canada.
