In Baku, the DRS zone was reduced by 100 metres, leading to a significant reduction in first-corner fighting. The DRS zones are also being reduced in Miami, although it was already difficult to overtake last year. Haas F1 boss Gunther Steiner doesn’t understand why this is happening.
Günther Steiner: “I tried to find out why they do it, but I didn’t get an answer. I want to know how these decisions are made. I don’t think it has anything to do with security. If someone explains why this is dangerous, I’m willing to listen, but no one said anything like that.
I think it’s time to understand why overtaking has become more difficult. Perhaps this is due to a change in the design of the bottom, or the fact that the cars generate more downforce, or it is a combination of reasons.
It’s important to make sure that we don’t have to change the regulations for next year in August, because by then a lot of money will have been invested in developing cars. Either you need to change something now, or don’t change at all. This should be questioned and not ignored.
We were one of the first to talk about it. Our drivers immediately said the car was worse than in 2022, but we were told it was only in our car. We were alone then, but now everyone is talking about it. It seems to me that things have not improved with the latest changes in the rules.”
