Mercedes has a replacement for Hamilton just in case

Lewis Hamilton struggled out of the cockpit due to back pain after finishing the race in Baku. The seven-time world champion told the press he lacked words to describe the pain he felt behind the wheel from the car’s strong build.

The Mercedes driver needs time to recover, but the next stage, the Canadian Grand Prix, starts in a few days. The rider’s health problems are a source of concern for Mercedes team leader Toto Wolff.

When asked after the finish if he was worried that Lewis might miss the Canadian round because of back pain, Toto said: “Yeah, sure. I haven’t spoken to him after the race, but it’s clear that the problem is more serious than muscle pain. The pain already penetrates into the spine and can have certain consequences.

I don’t think it’s unique to Lewis, though it’s probably the most acute in his case. George Russell and other riders are also having problems.

The solution could be to have someone in reserve, but we already have a reserve driver in each stage to guarantee the participation of two cars.

Lewis was in a really bad shape after the finish and we have to find a solution. In Baku, the problems were exacerbated by the fact that the car hit the bottom of the track harder due to bumps. These things are connected – on some tracks the build-up effect didn’t show at all, on others it came back. Obviously this is somehow related to the aerodynamic efficiency of the bottom.
