Last year’s lap record in Miami was broken on Friday, when Max Verstappen completed a second practice lap in 1:27.930 – 0.866 seconds faster than Charles Leclerc’s pole and two seconds faster than Friday’s best time of 2022. Pirelli is pleased with the tire performance on the new asphalt track in Miami.
Simone BeraPirelli Chief Engineer: “Friday’s two hours of practice at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami were intense.
One of the unknowns was the new asphalt, but in recent races we have seen that the 2023 cars are significantly faster than last year, as evidenced by the result of the second practice session, which surpassed last year’s pole position by nine tenths . Based on the information we have received from the teams, we can expect even better lap times on Saturday.
The new tarmac is very slick and slippery and offers good traction that improves as conditions improve. Together with the increase in the speed of the cars, this led to some overheating of the rear tyres. We saw granulation on the Medium and Soft tyres, and not only on the rear tyres, but also on the front tyres, which work very hard on this track. The hard tires proved to be very stable. Let’s see how track conditions will change on Saturday given the weather conditions. More clouds are expected on Sunday and a good chance of rain.”
