As predicted by Pirelli, most drivers completed the race distance in Baku with one pit stop, and the top four changed tires twice using the virtual safety car.
Mario IsolaPirelli: “One pit stop would have been enough in a race, but the temptation to change tires with minimal loss of time in a virtual safety car was too great not to take advantage of. This factor determined both the timing of the pit stops and the strategy of the race.
However, seven of the fifteen finishing riders were limited to a single pit stop, once again underlining the reliability and efficiency of our rubber. It was clear that these conditions – with hot track and high speeds – could be handled better by harder compounds, so many teams kept more than one mandatory set of hard tires for the race. †
