Sergio Pérez is a fast rider with six wins, but his team-mate Max Verstappen has more than six, but now, after four stages of the season, they are just six points apart. Until now, it was believed that the two-time world champion is the undisputed leader of the team, and the Mexican plays the role of second fiddle to him.
Since Valtteri Bottas was once in a similar situation at Mercedes, he was asked in Miami what advice he could give Sergio?
“I don’t know, we have to think,” was the reaction of the Finnish Alfa Romeo racer. – You have to get everyone to support you so that the whole team believes you can win. But Sergio is working in all directions, I have no doubt about that, because now he has to develop success. When you show good results several races in a row, the whole team starts to support you and that has a positive effect on everything.”
Bottas says you first have to overcome the mistrust within the team, although he didn’t quite succeed when he played for Mercedes. According to him, the team will let the riders participate until a certain point in the season, but then it will become clear who to bet on.
When asked if the teams really give their drivers a level playing field when the championship is at stake, Valtteri replied: “I think so – up to a certain point in the season. However, different teams work differently. This affects the decisions they make, how they do it, and so on. But they can really give their riders an equal chance.
Personally, every year I definitely felt like I was given such an opportunity, but at a certain point in the season, the Mercedes management made a decision.
However, it is still quite an early stage of the season and Sergio has a good chance to beat Max. I can imagine that Red Bull will decide after some time who should become champion, but so far that has not happened.
