Carlos Sainz set the third fastest time in qualifying for the Miami Grand Prix, the Spanish driver’s best result this season. His Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc crashed the car in the qualifying final, after showing the seventh result.
Carlo Sainz (3rd): “A very difficult qualifying for everyone due to the fact that it was not easy to find an approach to the tires on this asphalt. I had to fight all qualifying – it’s easy to make a mistake in a situation like that.
As the session progressed, the wind increased, making it even more difficult to fly. In general a good starting position, but I think the result could have been better.
We don’t know how fast our car will be in a heat race. Normally race pace is our weak point, but this weekend we will try to work better than last year. The podium will be a good result.”
Charles Leclerc (7th): “It is unacceptable that I make the same mistake in the same corner for the second day in a row. I am very disappointed in myself. You can always find an excuse – strong wind, difficult track conditions, the settings of the car were not the easiest, but I chose them myself. I wanted these settings, although I knew it was going to be difficult with that, but I thought with these settings I could get the most out of the car in the final.
Speed in qualifying is one of my strengths. Usually I manage to do well in the final because I take more risks than others, but this time I overdid it.
Again, I am very disappointed with my performance because I made the exact same mistake yesterday. This shouldn’t have happened again, but now you have to think about the race. I will start seventh, the weather can make it difficult, but I hope to have a decent race and get back to the front rows.
Aston Martins look very fast at race pace. I don’t know how I will finish, but the podium will be a very good result given our race pace.”
