Before the start of the Miami Grand Prix, the riders were introduced in turn by rapper LL Cool J accompanied by an orchestra led by Will.i.am. Mercedes driver and GPDA union president George Russell did not like the ceremony.
George Russell: “We discussed this issue at the pilot briefing on Friday night. Everyone has a different attitude, but it is clear that what is happening in this case illustrates the American approach to sports.
My personal opinion is not for me. I’m here to race, not for show, I’m here to fight and win. But I understand that we will have to agree.
The FIA has ordered us to get to the ceremony 10 minutes earlier than usual. But we are already half an hour before the start in the sun in overalls. I don’t think there is any other sport in the world where you sit in the sun for half an hour before the game starts and there are cameras everywhere filming your participation in the show.
I appreciate it in the world of show business, but we want the best for our sport. We’re open to change, but we don’t want to see these kinds of shows every weekend.
I like to participate in the traditional ceremony before the start, when the national anthem is played – this is our respect for the country we perform in, but I have doubts about additional shows.
