Ferrari’s best result in Miami was Carlos Sainz’s fifth. His teammate Charles Leclerc finished seventh. The Scuderia admit that they have not yet been able to solve the problem of the lack of speed on the track.
Carlo Sainz (5e): “I believe we are in the middle of a learning process. The information gathered this weekend will help us immensely in that regard. We were very fast in qualifying and in the race on Medium tires I attacked Fernando Alonso, tried to cut, but in the next section on Hard I lost almost 20 seconds.
We are much faster on Medium and we need to understand why. At the moment I have no idea. Our car is behaving very unstable and for this race we paid the price. Before the start we had a lot of unknowns and, as I said, we have a lot to learn.
Of course, these are not the positions the team wants to go to, so it’s important to take the next steps in the right direction. We’ll keep trying different solutions, that’s all I can say.”
Charles Leclerc (7th): “I had problems all race. A similar picture to the beginning of the year – we are competitive in qualifying, but in the race serious problems begin.
Our car has a very narrow range and as soon as you go a little further, serious problems with the balance set in, which changes from turn to turn. There can be severe understeer in one corner and this turns into severe oversteer in the next.
All this makes you feel unconfident in the car. In addition, the car hit the bottom of the track hard during the race, for which I have no explanation – I have to check everything. We lack stability, but we will try to improve.
We still have a lot of work to do. We need to find a solution to the problems with the car in race mode.
Mercedes are fast, Aston Martins are very fast in the race, Alpines look good in the long run too. I have nothing to add to the fact that the team has a lot of work to do.”
Frederick Vasseur, Team leader: “There is no doubt that we have a lot of work to do. It is necessary to analyze the results of the weekend, but we also saw positive aspects. Our car is fast in qualifying, although it was not possible to put all the components together on Saturday.
In the race we had a harder time. At a distance, the car lacks a bit of stability – the drivers did everything they could, but this was not enough. I think it has to do with rubber and we need to take a step forward in that area.”
