Alonso: We will try to have our own race

Fernando Alonso is the most experienced driver in the championship and although he starts from second place in today’s Miami Grand Prix, he understands all the difficulties that await Aston Martin and assesses his abilities quite realistically.

Fernando Alonso: “I don’t think our goal should be to win, especially given how the weekend unfolded. I think even on the podium it will be difficult to climb, but we will try to hold the race in our own way. This is how we have been working since the beginning of the season and we can say that we are now in a privileged position because we did not expect to rise to such high positions.

Therefore, every circle in the Miami Grand Prix that we pass, taking these positions, will be just a gift to us. I think the team is really enjoying it now. We will try to stay ahead of Sergio Perez in the first corner because we want to lead the race, even if it’s just a few laps.

And then we just end up where we deserve. If it’s 5th place, then so be it. If the seventh, then the seventh. If you manage to climb the podium again, then overall great! But I expect the race to be difficult. Although usually Sunday is our day.

As a rule, our car allows us to work gently with rubber, we have great race pace, although we sometimes experience some difficulties on Saturday. But if you manage to start from higher positions, that usually simplifies things a bit. Although of course very strong opponents will start behind us.

Ferrari showed excellent speed this weekend, but they were fast in Baku and now they have prepared some new products. Of course Max Verstappen will move forward quickly during the race. Therefore, you will have to look carefully in the rear-view mirrors, but we will act in our own way and try to earn as many points as possible to stay ahead of Mercedes, our main rivals. They’re not doing well this weekend…

It is important for us to avoid unnecessary risks and to continue to study the characteristics of our machine. The track outside the main stretch remains very dusty, so it is very difficult to overtake, as this dust sticks to the tyres, and it is possible to get rid of it only after two or three turns. In general I foresee difficulties, but in general the grip on the race track is very good.
