Herbert called for a ban on radio communications during the race

The idea of limiting radio communication between the team and the racers was tried several times in Formula 1, but nothing came of it – today’s cars are too complicated. Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert proposes to return to this proposal.

Johnny Herbert: “Honestly, I would have banned radio communication during Sunday’s race. The software that calculates different strategy options is fantastic now, but I would like to see the decision not made by the computer, but by the racer, as Ayrton, Nigel, Damon and I did in the past.

We discussed a possible strategy before the start, we had a plan, but sometimes we had to make a decision ourselves. Now this is done solely based on what the program offers.

I want to go back a little bit. I don’t like when a rider is told, “You’re going too fast, your tires are a little overheated.” The rider has to feel it for himself – and react accordingly. And today they only respond because of what they hear on the radio, focused on the program.

On Friday and Saturday, the teams could do everything and on Sunday they could say to the riders: “Here’s the car, we gave it everything, now it’s up to you, see you at the end of the race.”
