Safnauer: We are gradually correcting the situation

In the last five races of the season, Alpine has scored points just three times and in Miami it was only the second time that both Renault works team cars crossed the finish line in the top ten.

On the one hand, the company’s management does not hide their dissatisfaction with such results, on the other hand, Alpine F1 performed even better last weekend than in the previous two stages.

Otmar Szafnauer: “We have really improved. Both riders have earned points and if we manage to do that throughout the year, our position will be much stronger. And we haven’t lost much to the leaders – at least on this particular track. If we were a few tenths faster we could be ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton.

The novelties we presented in Baku work and in Miami it was confirmed that we have achieved more downforce primarily thanks to the modernized underside of the car. So we are gradually correcting the situation.”

The question is how long the leadership of the French concern is willing to wait for more noticeable changes for the better, because Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi talks about the problem of trust in team management for a reason: “The level of confidence increases as all is well with the results, but if they are bad, confidence is lost. Initially, everyone receives a credit of trust, but then you have to redeem this credit.”

But even if Renault takes tough measures, they can theoretically limit themselves to a few personnel changes, and in principle we are not talking about more drastic decisions.

According to Rossi, don’t be afraid that Renault may restrict participation in Formula 1: “This risk is nil. The company has an exceptionally strong drive to succeed. We understood that there would be obstacles along the way, and now we encountered them. There will be many new difficulties in the future, but in the past two years, other teams have not escaped them, such as sports life.

But it bothers me that we are performing worse than we could and should. However, there is no doubt that we will stay in Formula 1 in 10 years.”
