At Baku, Valtteri Bottas failed to compete for top ten places, which is not quite typical of the Finnish Alfa Romeo driver, as he has consistently earned points in six of the previous seven stages of the championship.
After the finish of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Valtteri suggested that the problems hindering him could be related to the new components the team tested for the first time this past weekend.
“Between Friday and Saturday a lot of parts of the car were replaced and after that it got really hard to fly,” Bottas admitted in an interview with Viaplay. “We need to find out whether such a noticeable drop in machine efficiency is due to some of these new components, although I’m practically convinced of that.
I tried to do everything in my power, but the car didn’t have enough speed. We were very far from the calculated results on the circle and from the pace we had hoped for. At the end of the race even Williams was faster than us and this suggests that we were not at the level we should be.
The rear wheels of the car didn’t hold the track at all, which was a bit odd considering that the parts we changed were supposed to increase the traction of the driving wheels. I couldn’t go at my partner’s pace and give way to him, not even on the straights – Guanyu Zhou seemed to be in a different league. He was almost a second faster than me, which was kind of weird. I hope we can fight for better results in Canada.”
